Legend says it was mined on the mysterious, fog-shrouded Island of Zabargad (now St. John’s Island) in the Red Sea as early as 1500 BCE.
The miners could only dig for it at night, because the brilliant green gems were said to be invisible in daylight!
Ancient Egyptians believed peridot protected against nightmares and evil spirits — and Cleopatra herself is rumoured to have worn peridot, mistaking it for emerald!
